Parikrama: a journey in Indian Dance, Yoga, Tabla ----- Fri April 15 , Sat April 16
Three Ottawa artists, Anjali, Basia Going and Blair Miller, collaborate to create an authentic colourful, riveting experience. Inspired by the beauty and power of India's ancient artistic traditions, the environment and the philosophy of ancient Hindu texts, this unique presentation is a visual delight.
The recital : opens with a dance performed in front images of the Goddess , unique video of rituals, art, temples and the dynamic scenery of the Himalaya and images of rare miniature paintings housed in major museums in India and Europe. This is followed by the nine moods , a theatrical presentation based on the Kathakali style of dance. The first half concludes with Rabindranath Tagore's eulogy to Mother Earth, in homage to Earth Day (April 22). The choreography intersperses traditional rhythmic structures ( jatis ) with the poetry of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) in English, set to classical Indian music and an original score by the Ottawa based composer Carl Schultz.
In the second half
Blair Miller (tabla)
who has trained and performed in India performs a solo and accompanies Anjali's dance in the Kathak and Sufi Dance traditions. The evening concludes with a unique collaboration between Anjali and Basia, exploring the rich mythology and artistic presence of the God Shiva through dance and yoga. Basia (Adishesha Yoga) is one of Ottawa's leading yogis.
Venue: Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Ave (behind Rideau Centre. Parking opposite)
